Officially registered in October 1986 the International Plastic Modellers Society Dunedin has roots in a small group of modellers who gathered in a private house to share skills, knowledge and enthusiasm. Gradually word spread and the group out grew the domestic front room forcing a move to the St Kilda Community Club Room.
Becoming a formal group the first name adopted was the “Dunedin Scale Aircraft Modellers Club” and through contact with the local retailers and word of mouth the membership base continued to grow and along with this the diversity of the models being constructed.Concurrently “friendships” were being made with modellers around the country, in particular in Auckland home of IPMS New Zealand.
Late 1986 considering the advantages of joining this world wide community and to reflect the diversity of our membership the name Dunedin Scale Aircraft Modellers was dropped and the club registered as IPMS Dunedin Inc. Since then the club has grown going from strength to strength.

- staging of the IPMS New Zealand Nationals in 2003 and 2015
- hosting of the South Island Championships in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2017.
Today the club meets at the Catholic Pastoral Offices in Rattray Street on a weekly basis, with all meetings apart from the last one of the calendar month termed as building evenings where members work on their current projects. The building evenings have developed into a very strong part of the club culture with the sharing of ideas, techniques and skills.
